A. Everyone is so different when it comes to portraits but I’m a pretty good judge of character when I first meet people. I can tell immediately who’s comfortable in front of the camera, what sort of people prefer posed shots and who prefers candid. Whatever sort of person you are, the most important thing in a portrait is that I capture the ‘real’ you – photos should tell some sort of story of what you’re about. I don’t just turn up on the day with my camera, I spend a lot of time before the shoot planning how to get the best from a family and invite you to contribute your ideas so I have a good idea of what you’re about as an individual / couple / family.
A.You’re not the only one, believe me. Most people don’t really ‘like’ having their photo taken. My aim is to set up scenarios that allow your family to interact with one another naturally. I’ll give you some direction, some of the photos will be posed and some will be candid (depending on you). Feedback from my clients is that my sessions are more fun than they expect, they feel more relaxed in front of the camera than they expect, I’m professional and I prepare them well in advance. As part of my welcome info, you will receive ideas on how to best prepare for the session.
A. Yes absolutely, I’ve invested in professional equipment and training over several years so you can be confident I know what I’m doing. However, it’s not just about equipment or pixel size (everyone has a phone these days). It’s about using light in the right way, knowing which camera settings to use and how to compose images in a creative way. I also take care to edit them to a high standard and prepare them for professional printing.
A. This is something we can discuss at your consultation but in general, little ones feel really comfortable at home so this is often a good option for them. Lots of natural light is a must though so if you’re home is a dark then an alternative location might be best. Locations work really well for family shoots as they require more space. If you’re not keen on having it done in public, then we can choose a more private location.
A. If the weather is torrential and we cannot shoot, the session be rescheduled at a mutually agreeable date. Clouds, wind and light rain aren’t a problem and I usually go ahead in this case.
A. Never work with children and animals, I know, I know. Children can definitely be a challenge to photograph at the best of times but this isn’t necessarily a problem. The important thing is to be flexible – it can often be a great opportunity to capture their ‘real’ personality. I had a family session where the child (age 5) just wanted to wear a cat mask the whole time (her Mum wasn’t so keen), so I played along with it, took several shots of her playing around in her cat mask. Once she was satisfied, she took it off and we got some great family shots too (without the cat mask).
Don’t worry if your child does have a tantrum, I have seen plenty of them with my own children and I’m happy to put my camera down for a bit until it passes and everyone’s ready to go again. You might want to try offering then a reward (or bribe) for behaving beautifully until the end of the session. If a child absolutely refused to co-operate (and this has never happened to me) then I would happily re-arrange the shoot or refund the session fee.
A. For a
- Maternity session – book between 32nd and 36th week. When your bump looks beautiful but you’re not feeling too uncomfortable.
- Newborn lifestyle session (with family) – book anytime up to when they’re 6 weeks old (the earlier, the better).
- Baby, child or family session – book as soon as possible. Please be aware that my sessions are often booked 3 months+ in advance. I do my best to accommodate all requests but please do try to book early (particularly if you’d prefer a weekend) to avoid disappointment.
A. For an outdoors family shoot, morning or late afternoon is best. For a baby / child shoot, whenever they’re at their best. In my experience, little ones are happiest in the mornings and with a full tummy. We can discuss this in more detail when you book.
A. Up to 30 mins of travel time is included in the session fee. I’m happy to provide a price for anything further afield.
